HDPE containers (High-Density Polyethylene) are present in many products in our daily lives: cleaning products, chemicals, lubricants, dairy and pharmaceutical products, among others. It is one of the most widely used materials by the plastic industry thanks to its competitive cost, resistance and versatility. If you want to know its real advantages and how HDPE containers are manufactured, keep reading.
3 advantages of High-Density Polyethylene
HDPE containers stand out from other materials for their rigidity, opacity and long service life. These are three advantages worth explaining:
- Good processability: It melts and molds easily, allowing the manufacture of containers with complex geometry consistently and at large scale. This ease of processing is one of the reasons why it is so widely used in blow molding container production.
- High chemical resistance: HDPE offers excellent resistance to acids, solvents, detergents and many corrosive products, as well as good moisture barrier. It is the preferred material for packaging chemicals and agrochemicals.
- Non-toxic: One of the main characteristics that made it the preferred material for many industries is that it contains no toxins in its composition. Therefore, it is safe for the manufacture of containers that protect and preserve food or pharmaceuticals as long as the appropriate resin grade is selected and the corresponding documentation is available.
How are HDPE containers manufactured?
HDPE containers are a hollow body manufactured mainly by blow molding. However, there are other procedures that allow the production of other types of products.
- Extrusion-blow: The resin is melted and extruded in the form of a hollow tube called a parison. This is closed inside a metal mold and inflated with pressurized air until it takes the shape of the cavity. Upon cooling, the container retains its shape and is ejected from the mold. It allows the continuous manufacture of bottles, carboys and drums, with controlled wall thickness and high lot-to-lot repeatability.
- Extrusion: Preliminary stage that feeds the blow molding. The material is softened and passed through a nozzle at constant pressure and flow to form the parison. It is also used independently for profiles and hollow articles of great length.
- Injection: Used for solid parts and precision components such as caps, handles and dispensers, not for the container body. The molten HDPE is injected into a closed mold and takes the exact shape of the cavity.
