How Are Plastic Bottles Manufactured?
Most plastic bottles are made of PET (polyethylene terephthalate). This material is preferred for its resistance, transparency and lightness.
- Through a process called polymerization, PET pellets are produced, where long chains of molecules form and take the shape of small pieces of plastic.
- PET pellets or resin are melted in an extrusion machine to become a liquid material.
- This already melted material is injected into a steel mold, which has the shape of the preform. Preforms are small plastic tubes.
- The preform is placed in a mold with the shape of the bottle. Compressed air is blown inside it, causing it to expand until it fits the new mold, this process is called blow molding.
- The bottle is cooled and then solidified
- It is extracted from the mold and ready!
How Do Manufacturers Guarantee the Durability of Plastic Bottles?
Once the bottles have been molded and cooled, they go through a strict series of quality controls. In this phase, each bottle is inspected to ensure it has no defects, such as cracks or deformations.
Tests are performed on measurements and weight, pressure resistance, impact and tensile strength to ensure they can withstand a large amount of weight without breaking. If any bottle does not meet quality standards, it is discarded.
Finally, in some cases, plastic bottles can be treated with additives that improve the material's resistance. These additives can include antioxidants, which protect the plastic from degradation, or UV stabilizers, which protect the bottles from ultraviolet radiation.
