You have probably noticed that some plastic products have the initials PP, which stand for Polypropylene. This material competes among industries as one of the most used.

What is it and how is it obtained?
Polypropylene PP is a thermoplastic obtained from a Ziegler Natta polymerization reaction, that is, a technique in which a catalyst is used to have said chemical reaction.
The physical properties of polypropylene are determined by molecular weight; during its processing, its susceptibility to degradation, exposure to high temperatures and UV radiation must be taken into account.
Characteristics of Polypropylene
Unlike PET, PP is more flexible, but this is not its only characteristic; some others are:
- Low production cost
- Rigidity without losing its crystallinity
- Greater heat resistance
- It can be processed by injection molding, extrusion and thermoforming (making it compatible with most processing techniques)
- It is one of the plastics with the lowest density
- Chemically inert
Is Polypropylene (PP) toxic?
No, it is considered a fairly safe plastic for humans. However, if it is heated to high temperatures to the point of burning, it will release gases that if inhaled in large quantities can be toxic to the environment and people.
