Plastic is a synthetic polymer composed of chains of molecules called monomers that unite to form moldable materials.

Manufacturing Process
Petroleum and natural gas are the main raw materials from which plastic is obtained; both hydrocarbons contain large amounts of carbon, which is essential for the production of this material.
The process begins with the extraction of both (petroleum and natural gas), they are refined, converted into monomers and then united through chemical processes to form a larger molecular structure, known as polymers.
In the polymerization process, additives can be added, which serve to improve or modify the properties of plastic. With them we can add color, rigidity, resistance and prevent flammability.
Over the years, alternative methods have been sought using renewable materials, for example, the use of vegetable oils. Similarly, there has been an increase in awareness on the part of the population to reuse plastic.
Types of Manufacturing Processes
To give plastic the desired shape, there are different types of processes. Some of the most common are:
- Injection Molding: The plastic is melted and enters the mold with the desired shape, once it cools and solidifies, it is ejected leaving the desired part.
- Injection – Blow: The already melted plastic enters a mold, but this time hollow to then introduce air causing the mold to expand and take the final shape; it is used in containers or vessels.
- Extrusion – Blow: It is one of the most used processes, the polymer is melted and extracted into a hollow tube to be closed with a cold metal mold, finally air is injected and thus we obtain containers or bottles that are more rigid and resistant.
- 3D Printing: With these printers, three-dimensional parts are created through CAD models and the material is built layer by layer.
